El 11 de septiembre de 2021 falleció Abimael Guzmán Reynoso, máximo dirigente del Partido Comunista del Perú – Sendero Luminoso. Su muerte generó un intenso debate público sobre el destino de su cuerpo. Días después, el Gobierno promulgó con urgencia la Ley N.º 31352, que, por razones de seguridad nacional y salud pública, faculta al Estado a disponer de los restos de cualquier dirigente subversivo, cremándolos en lugares secretos para evitar que sus tumbas se conviertan en centros de peregrinación. En ese marco, el Ministerio del Interior emitió el Comunicado N.º 05-2021, en el que documenta y notifica oficialmente la cremación de los restos de Guzmán.

Estas medidas fueron recibidas como “la mejor opción” por diversos sectores de la sociedad, no solo por colectivos conservadores, sino también por organizaciones dedicadas a la defensa de los derechos humanos y a las luchas por la reivindicación ciudadana.

La obra invita a reflexionar sobre cómo se construye la lógica que separa lo salvable de lo desechable. ¿Qué vuelve a un cuerpo llorable o, por el contrario, lo condena al olvido? ¿Qué tecnologías producimos y reproducimos para trazar la línea que clasifica a ciertos cuerpos como deseables, memorables, inocentes y salvables, y a otros como espurios, indeseables, culpables y condenables? ¿Sobre qué tecnologías de rescate y desaparición se sostiene eso que llamamos “ciudadanía”?

On 11 September 2021 Abimael Guzmán Reynoso, supreme leader of the Communist Party of Peru – Shining Path, passed away. His death ignited a heated public debate over the fate of his body. After several days, the government urgently enacted Law No. 31352, which, on grounds of national security and public health, authorises the State to take charge of the remains of any subversive leader, cremating them in secret locations to prevent their grave from becoming a pilgrimage site. Within this framework, the Ministry of the Interior issued Statement No. 05-2021, documenting and officially notifying the cremation of Guzmán’s remains.

These measures were hailed as the “best option” by a broad spectrum of society, from conservative groups to organisations devoted to human-rights advocacy and civic struggles.

The piece invites us to consider the logic that separates what is worth saving from what may — or must — disappear. What makes a body mournable or forgettable? What technologies do we create and reproduce to draw the boundary that classifies certain bodies as desirable, memorable, innocent and salvageable, and others as impure, undesirable, guilty and condemnable? Upon which techniques of rescue and disappearance does what we call “citizenship” rest?
